Moroccans Maintain Their Status as the Largest Foreign Worker Community in Spain
Moroccans have confirmed their position as the largest active foreign community in the Spanish job market, with 375,042 individuals enrolled in the social security system. This places them ahead of Romanians (351,455), Colombians (243,781), and Italians (213,466), according to the Spanish Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration, announced on Monday.
The number of foreign workers in Spain hit a record high in June 2025, reaching 3,096,014 individuals, an increase of 25,184 enrollees compared to May, reflecting the ongoing dynamism of foreign employment in the country.
Citizens from outside the European Union constituted the majority of enrollees at 2,137,559 individuals (equivalent to 69 percent), compared to 958,455 from EU countries (31 percent). Currently, foreigners account for 14.2 percent of all contributors to the Spanish social security system.
The report highlighted that 40.6 percent of the jobs created after the labor market reform were filled by foreign workers, underscoring their vital contribution to the national economy.
Most registrations in the general social security system comprised 2,602,680 individuals (84 percent of the total), while the self-employed workers’ system (RETA) experienced a 6.8 percent annual increase, setting a new record with 486,894 enrollees.
In a statement, Minister of Inclusion Ilma Saith praised the crucial role played by foreign workers, particularly Moroccans, in Spain’s economic development, emphasizing that their contributions “enhance social cohesion and the country’s inclusive growth.”
