The Moroccan traditional industry joins the energy transition: A partnership for more sustainable professions
The Ministry of Traditional Industry and the Social and Solidarity Economy, in collaboration with the Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency, launched a new initiative aimed at promoting sustainability in artisan activities. This was marked by the signing of two agreements on Tuesday, July 8, focusing on rationalizing energy consumption in the traditional industry and guiding stakeholders towards more responsible practices.
This cooperation aims to reduce the use of wood and gas in workshops, traditional ovens, and baths, while improving energy performance and the working conditions of artisans by providing technical support and spreading the use of new technologies. These technologies include high-efficiency gas and wood ovens, alongside developing innovative solutions suitable for rural and mountain environments.
The agreements also emphasized training and awareness as crucial tools for ensuring the lasting adoption of new behaviors. They encompass enhancing energy efficiency for public infrastructure related to traditional industry, as well as working to establish energy classifications and labels specific to crafts.
In a practical step, the specific agreement outlines the development of two prototypes of gas ovens intended for ceramic and pottery artisans and for traditional bakery professionals. These will be accompanied by training programs on their design and use, along with the launch of a national label specifically for these new installations.
This project contributes to implementing a dual transition within the traditional industry sector by reducing the carbon footprint and protecting natural resources while enabling artisans to adapt to current environmental and economic challenges. This direction reflects the authorities’ desire to make traditional crafts a driver of social and environmental innovation in Morocco.
