Japan Records Highest Temperature in Its History Amid Rising Climate Concerns
Follow-Up
On Wednesday, Japan recorded its highest temperature on record, reaching 41.2 degrees Celsius in Tanba, Hyogo Prefecture, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. This is the highest temperature ever recorded since monitoring began in the country.
This record surpassed the previous highs of 41.1 degrees Celsius in Komatsu in 2018 and in Hamamatsu in 2020.
The current heatwave comes amid particularly alarming climate conditions, as June 2025 was the hottest month on record in Japan, with an average temperature exceeding seasonal averages by 2.34 degrees Celsius. The summer of 2024 saw unprecedented high temperatures, similar to those of 2023, followed by a fall that also recorded record highs.
Experts attribute this increase in the intensity of heatwaves to climate change caused by human activity, which leads to greater frequency, duration, and severity of such events.
