In his official appointment session, the U.S. Ambassador to Morocco criticizes the Algerian regime and reaffirms support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.
Today, Tuesday, the U.S. Senate officially confirmed Duke Buchan III as the new ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco. In a hearing, the incoming ambassador expressed clear positions regarding the Western Sahara issue and bilateral relations with Rabat.
During the session, Buchan affirmed that Washington is renewing its commitment to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces, stressing that “there is no solution outside Moroccan sovereignty” and that the autonomy initiative remains the only serious and realistic framework for resolving the conflict.
He noted that former President Donald Trump had ordered an urgent resolution of this file through support for autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty, adding that he will work to expedite this process as soon as he assumes his duties.
The new ambassador did not hesitate to send veiled messages to the Algerian regime, emphasizing that the continuation of the conflict serves disruptive regional agendas and hinders opportunities for peace and stability in North Africa.
Buchan also highlighted that Morocco is a reliable strategic partner for the United States, announcing that he will work to enhance bilateral cooperation in security, military, and economic fields, including technology transfer collaboration.
It is worth noting that Duke Buchan III previously served as the U.S. Ambassador to Spain and Andorra from 2017 to 2021 and is considered one of President Trump’s close associates.
