Ecuador Confirms Support for the Autonomy Initiative as the Basis for Resolving the Moroccan Sahara Conflict

The Republic of Ecuador affirmed yesterday, Friday in Rabat, that the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco forms the basis for settling the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

This position was stated during a press conference held by Ecuador’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Gabriela Sommerfeld, following her meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.

In her statement, the Ecuadorian minister expressed her country’s support for Morocco’s serious efforts to reach a political, realistic, pragmatic, and lasting solution to this conflict, which is acceptable to all parties and within the framework of respecting United Nations resolutions. She added that this position aligns with the views of the majority of UN member states, which believe that the autonomy initiative represents the optimal solution to this regional dispute.

On October 22, 2024, the Republic of Ecuador announced the withdrawal of its recognition of the so-called “Sahrawi Republic,” deciding to end any communication with this unrecognized entity. This decision reflects a clear shift in Ecuador’s stance regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue, providing explicit support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom.
