Wydad SC Loses to Manchester City, Displaying Offensive Courage in Their Global Debut
The Wydad Athletic Club began its journey in the FIFA Club World Cup with a loss against English side Manchester City, falling 2-0 in a match held on the evening of Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, as part of the opening round of the group stage.
The Moroccan team, despite facing a formidable opponent, put in a respectable performance, challenging one of the world’s strongest clubs with intensity and bravery. They did not adopt a defensive stance but rather pressed high up the pitch, managing to reach Manchester City’s goal on several occasions through the effective movements of Cassius Mailula, Osama El Zamraoui, and Thimbenkhosi Lorch. However, lapses in concentration and a lack of decisiveness prevented Wydad from scoring a goal to level the match.
Manchester City opened the scoring early with Phil Foden finding the back of the net in the second minute, capitalizing on a defensive error from Wydad. Jeremy Doku then doubled the lead in the 42nd minute, concluding a well-executed attack and ending the first half with the English team in front.
Despite City’s relative control, Wydad players showcased tactical discipline and offensive courage in the second half as they continued to seek a way to narrow the deficit. The brilliance of the English goalkeeper and the defensive line thwarted several Moroccan opportunities, the most notable of which came in the final quarter of the match.
In the closing minutes, tensions flared following a rough challenge from Manchester City’s Rego Lewis on Samuel Obing, which resulted in his red card in the 88th minute. However, the numerical disadvantage did not allow Wydad to capitalize in the final moments.
