The United Kingdom has expressed its full support for the autonomy proposal put forward by Morocco in 2007 as a solution to the regional dispute over Western Sahara, describing it as “the most credible, serious, and realistic basis” for reaching a lasting settlement on this issue.

This position was stated in a joint declaration signed in Rabat between British Minister of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs David Lammy and Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad Nasser Bourita, following formal discussions between the two sides.

The statement confirmed that the United Kingdom will continue to support this Moroccan proposal at bilateral, regional, and international levels, noting that London is closely monitoring the “positive dynamics” surrounding the issue under the leadership of King Mohammed VI. Moreover, the document highlighted Britain’s commitment to this conflict, asserting that its resolution would enhance stability in North Africa and rejuvenate bilateral relations and regional integration.

The British side also expressed its openness to supporting economic projects in Western Sahara through UK Export Finance, which may contribute to financing investments within its commitment to mobilize £5 billion to support development projects in various regions of Morocco.

The United Kingdom reiterated its recognition of Morocco as a pivotal platform for development in Africa and affirmed its commitment to deepening the partnership with Rabat as a “strategic partner for growth in Africa.” Both parties emphasized their full support for the United Nations process, reaffirming their backing for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, Staffan de Mistura.

The joint statement concluded by highlighting the convergence of views between London and Rabat on the need for a prompt solution to the Western Sahara dispute, indicating that this solution serves the interests of all parties involved and contributes to enhancing regional security and stability.
