The Euro-Mediterranean Mediation Center for Security and Peace has strongly condemned the attack that targeted the Moroccan city of Smara, warning of the dangers posed by the escalation initiated by the Polisario Front, following the firing of projectiles near the city, specifically close to a facility belonging to the United Nations mission, MINURSO.
In a statement issued by the center, it was noted that the events of Friday, June 26, 2025, represent "a worrying security development and an unacceptable provocation that could open the door to a new wave of tensions threatening regional security and the safety of civilians and international missions alike."
The center affirmed that such actions clearly contradict international efforts aimed at calming tensions and achieving a political solution, reminding that resorting to violence will only undermine reconciliation processes and deepen the atmosphere of distrust.
Conversely, the center praised the Moroccan response to the incident, commending the "wisdom and restraint" that characterized Rabat’s reaction, emphasizing that Morocco once again demonstrated its commitment to avoiding escalation and adherence to international legitimacy as a responsible state aware of the consequences of any military slip in the region.
The center called on the Polisario Front to immediately halt any hostile activities that could drag the region into a zone of tension, asserting that security in the Sahel and Sahara cannot be built on a logic of challenge or enforcement of facts through force.
The center concluded its statement by renewing its support for all international initiatives aimed at promoting security and peace in the region, provided that they are conducted with respect for the national sovereignty of states, stressing that resolving the conflict over Western Sahara within the framework of the kingdom’s sovereignty remains the only realistic basis for ensuring lasting stability and collective security in the region.
