The Union of the Comoros has reaffirmed its full support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal submitted in 2007, considering it a serious and realistic basis for resolving the regional dispute over Western Sahara.
The permanent representative of the Comoros to the United Nations, Ambassador Ismail Chanfi, stated during his participation in the regional seminar of the UN’s Special Committee of the 24th Session, held in Dili, East Timor, that the Moroccan initiative is gaining increasing support within the United Nations and aligns with international law and Security Council resolutions.
The Comorian diplomat explained that the autonomy plan represents a practical political approach that has the backing of several countries. He called for engagement in the political dynamics led by the United Nations and support for the efforts of its personal envoy, Staffan de Mistura.
He also reiterated his country’s commitment to the principle of respecting the territorial integrity of UN member states, emphasizing the necessity of finding a realistic and sustainable political solution based on consensus that considers the Moroccan initiative.
