Slight Increase in Consumer Prices by 0.4% in May

According to data from the High Commission for Planning, the consumer price index rose by 0.4% in May 2025 compared to the same month last year.

The High Commission attributed this increase to a 0.5% rise in food prices and a 0.3% increase in non-food prices, with notable variations in non-food prices, including a 4.3% decrease in transport and a 3.9% increase in restaurants and hotels.

The index recorded a decrease of 0.4% compared to April 2025, driven by a decline in food prices by 0.8% and non-food prices by 0.1%.

Among the notable decreases in food prices from April to May 2025 were vegetables at 2.1%, fish and seafood at 1.7%, meat at 1.5%, milk, cheese, and eggs at 1%, as well as bread, grains, oils, and fruits at 0.3%. Conversely, prices for coffee, tea, and cocoa rose by 0.8%. Non-food items, particularly fuels, saw a decrease of 2.7%.

Regionally, the most significant declines were observed in Beni Mellal at 1.5%, Safi at 1.2%, Tangier at 1.1%, and Kenitra and Rachidia at 0.7%, while slight increases occurred in Laayoune and Al Hoceima at 0.2% and Marrakech at 0.1%.

The core inflation index, which excludes prices of regulated items and highly volatile goods, remained stable compared to April 2025, while it recorded an annual increase of 1.1% compared to May 2024.
