Sierra Leone Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative Before the UN’s Committee of 24

The Republic of Sierra Leone has renewed its clear and ongoing support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a definitive solution to the regional dispute over Western Sahara, during an official statement before the UN’s Committee of 24.

Sierra Leone’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Kelelo Tutangie, affirmed that this initiative, which has been deemed serious and credible by Security Council resolutions since 2007, enjoys growing international backing.

The Sierra Leonean official called for the resumption of the roundtable process in the same format and with the same participants, considering it a vital mechanism for achieving tangible progress towards a peaceful and lasting resolution of this manufactured conflict.

He also highlighted the strong relations and ongoing coordination between Morocco and the MINURSO mission, urging all other parties to respect the ceasefire and refrain from any actions that could hinder the mission’s tasks.

The ambassador lauded Morocco’s efforts to enhance economic and social development in the southern regions, as well as its constructive commitment to human rights, demonstrated through its continuous cooperation with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

He concluded by calling on all parties to engage seriously and in a spirit of consensus within the political process led by the United Nations under its Secretary-General’s supervision, to ensure an agreed-upon solution that puts an end to this long-standing conflict.
