Morocco Imposes Temporary Customs Duties of Up to 92% on Egyptian PVC Imports

The Moroccan Customs and Indirect Taxes Administration has decided to impose temporary customs duties on imports of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from Egypt, reaching up to 92%. This measure is part of preventive actions aimed at protecting the national industry.

The decision took effect on Friday and targets specific Egyptian companies identified in the results of an investigation conducted by Moroccan authorities regarding the evolution of imports and their prices in the local market.

According to official data, PVC imports from Egypt have seen a significant increase in recent months, which authorities consider to be a commercial practice that has severely harmed the local sector, resulting in price declines, disruption of investments, and a reduction in the production capacity of local factories.

The Customs Administration noted that the investigation was initiated following a request from players in the plastics sector, who reported suffering from market flooding practices, demanding urgent intervention to ensure fair competition conditions.

This action comes amid a broad discussion on the mechanisms for implementing the Agadir Free Trade Agreement among regional countries and its impact on the trade balance between member states, particularly in cases where import flows increase to levels affecting domestic production.
