Increase in Marine Fishery Discharges Along Mediterranean Coasts by 7%

The quantities of marine catch unloaded at ports and fishing villages along the Mediterranean coast of northern Morocco saw an increase of 7% by the end of May compared to the same period in 2024.

The total volume of these unloadings reached 7,030 tons, compared to 6,542 tons during the same timeframe last year, according to the latest report from the National Office of Fisheries, which details statistics on coastal and traditional fishing.

The commercial value of these quantities rose by 10%, amounting to 349.62 million dirhams, up from 316.6 million dirhams in the same period last year.

The quantity of surface fish unloaded along the coastal stretch from Tangier to Saidia experienced a slight increase of 1%, reaching 2,373 tons. However, its market value recorded a decline of 3%, settling at 68.05 million dirhams.

The volume of white fish grew by 4%, reaching 1,152 tons with a market value exceeding 45.15 million dirhams, also marking a 2% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

Shellfish discharges saw significant growth of 16%, reaching 2,950 tons, with a total value of 199.21 million dirhams, reflecting an 18% increase. The volume of crustaceans rose by 2%, totaling around 481 tons and valued at 36 million dirhams, up 10% year-on-year.

The National Office of Fisheries reported a national decline in the quantities of marketed coastal and traditional fishing by 18%, which did not exceed 321,520 tons. The commercial value of these products stood at approximately 4.42 billion dirhams, a slight increase of 1% compared to last year.
