FIFA is considering increasing the number of clubs participating in the Club World Cup to 48 teams starting from the 2029 edition, according to international media sources.
This move comes in response to growing pressure from major European clubs that have been unable to secure a spot in the current edition and are seeking greater opportunities for future participation.
The Guardian reported that FIFA might take this step if this summer’s tournament achieves organizational and marketing success, with competitions set to kick off next Saturday in the United States featuring 32 teams, including Wydad Casablanca representing Moroccan football.
These proposals aim to enhance fan engagement and boost revenues by attracting widely supported European clubs, especially with the absence of giants like Barcelona, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, and AC Milan from the 2025 edition.
FIFA intends to open a dialogue with all stakeholders to discuss the future of the tournament concerning its format and the number of teams, despite the lack of any advanced official consultations as of now.
