The Al-Azhar Mosque appreciates Morocco’s initiative to regulate contribution and support and calls for equitable family legislation
Al-Azhar participated, represented by Dr. Hassan Salah Al-Saghir, the Assistant Secretary-General for Scientific Affairs and Research at the Islamic Research Academy and the General Supervisor of Fatwa Committees at Al-Azhar Mosque, in the international seminar organized by the Moroccan Ministry of Justice on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, in Rabat, focused on “Implementing the Contribution and Support System in Light of the Recent Revisions of the Family Code.”
In his opening remarks, the Al-Azhar representative expressed great appreciation for the Moroccan initiative, considering that Morocco has been a pioneer for centuries in regulating this system, inspired by Maliki scholars, which is an intellectual and legislative leadership in promoting fairness within the family. He highlighted the jurisprudential and social significance of the contribution and support system, indicating that the contributions of family members in building family wealth should be recognized and documented to safeguard rights and avoid future disputes.
He clarified that Egyptian customs, especially in rural and Upper Egypt, reflect many instances of economic cooperation within families, necessitating flexible and fair legislative approaches while emphasizing that family relationships should not be reduced solely to financial aspects. He recalled Al-Azhar’s positions, led by the Grand Imam Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayyib, advocating for the revival of the contribution and support jurisprudence in previous sermons, conferences, and official statements, including the Islamic Thought Renewal Conference in 2020 and the Fatwa Center statement in 2022.
He called for precise legislation that balances protecting rights and maintaining human connections within the family, warning against transforming them into purely contractual relationships that strip them of their spiritual dimension. He stressed that women’s fairness must be comprehensive, integrating economic, moral, and spiritual aspects to enhance family stability and balanced development.
Al-Azhar’s participation in this meeting aligns with the Moroccan Kingdom’s approach to open up to comparative experiences and build a national consensus around the revision of the Family Code, aiming to achieve fairness and uphold the dignity of all family members amid contemporary transformations.
