A petition within the Peruvian Congress has called for support of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, advocating for the autonomy plan as a “serious solution that is consistent with international law.”
In a petition adopted by the majority of Peruvian lawmakers, the Congress also alerted the international community to the ties of “Polisario” with terrorist organizations such as Hezbollah, as well as networks involved in arms and human trafficking, and the exploitation of minors in the Tindouf camps.
In this context, international organizations were urged to investigate these crimes and impose the necessary sanctions.
The text of the petition reiterated Peru’s commitment to defending human rights, combating terrorism, and strengthening its diplomatic relations with countries that uphold values of peace, security, and development in their regions.
It noted that the initiative for autonomy proposed by Morocco in 2007 enjoys broad support from many countries, including the United States, Spain, and France, which “considered this proposal to be the most realistic and viable basis for a permanent solution to the conflict.” The petition also highlighted the involvement of “Polisario” in serious human rights violations that threaten regional and international security, pointing out that various reports from international think tanks have warned of attempts by the “Tehran-Hezbollah-Polisario” axis to destabilize North Africa and the Maghreb region through ideological infiltration, funding extremist activities, and arms proliferation, endangering the security of Peru’s partners, such as Morocco, and affecting the stability of the Mediterranean region.
The petition concluded that Peru should renew its commitment to international law, enhance peace and security, uphold human rights, and reject all forms of terrorism, violence, and illegal activities promoted by non-state actors that undermine stability.
This petition, adopted yesterday, is the second of its kind that the Peruvian Congress has approved in 2025, reaffirming its solid support for the autonomy plan and Morocco’s sovereignty over the southern regions.
This move is part of an increasing international momentum to support Morocco’s autonomy initiative in Western Sahara.
It represents a strong signal from the Peruvian legislative body and a significant contribution to international efforts aimed at achieving a political, realistic, fair, and lasting solution to this long-standing artificial conflict.
