28 beaches and four ports fly the Blue Flag in summer 2025
The Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection has announced the awarding of the “Blue Flag” to 28 beaches, four recreational ports, and one mountain lake for the summer of 2025, confirming their compliance with internationally recognized environmental quality standards.
All the beaches that received the certification in 2024 have renewed their accreditation, while Soula Beach (Tangier-Assilah Province) joined the list of classified beaches, reflecting the local actors’ commitment to coastal environmental protection.
The list includes beaches from various regions of the kingdom, from Tangier to Saidia, in addition to the mountain lake of Aklam Azkza, which is the first natural lake in Morocco to receive this distinction.
The significance of this environmental achievement stems from it being the result of cooperation among local authorities, municipal administrations, the private sector, and civil society within the “Clean Beaches” program launched by the foundation years ago.
Recreational ports have also seen remarkable development, with Tangier Marina joining the list this year, alongside the ports of Saidia, Marina Smir, and Al Hoceima. This expansion reflects a commitment to adopting a comprehensive environmental management approach for marine facilities, including waste management and quality of services directed at visitors.
According to the published figures, Morocco ranks 21st globally among 50 countries in the Blue Flag classification, making it the leading Arab country and the second in Africa in terms of the number of classified sites, enhancing its appeal as a sustainable eco-tourism destination.
The awarding of this certification is subject to several precise criteria, including bathing water quality, cleanliness and safety, environmental information, and sustainable management. Surprise inspections are conducted during the summer to ensure continued adherence to these standards.
The increase in the number of beaches nominated for this certification, which reached 45 beaches during the 2025 season, reflects the growing awareness among local authorities of the importance of the “Blue Flag” environmental label in promoting sustainable tourism competitiveness and enhancing the quality of life along the Moroccan coasts.
