Trump Announces 100% Tariff on Films Produced Outside the United States
President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he has ordered new tariffs on all films produced outside the United States, warning that Hollywood is being destroyed by American studios and filmmakers moving their productions abroad.
The announcement comes as the White House faces increasing criticism over its trade policies, which have seen Trump impose high tariffs on most countries around the world.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, “I authorize the Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to immediately begin the process of imposing a 100% tariff on all films that enter our country after having been produced on foreign soil.”
Trump’s remarks follow China’s announcement last month that it would reduce the number of American films it imports, a move that significantly affected the burden of Trump’s tariffs.
On Sunday, Trump wrote, “The film industry in America is dying a rapid death. Other countries are offering all kinds of incentives to lure our filmmakers and studios away from the United States.”
He added, “Hollywood, along with many other areas within the United States, is being destroyed,” claiming it poses a threat to national security.
The immediate implications of the decision on the film industry remain unclear, as does how such tariffs would be specifically enforced.
Trump did not mention the television production industry, which is also a lucrative sector and is gaining popularity.
