The President of the Mauritanian National Assembly, Mohamed Bembé Ould Mekte, called today in Nouakchott for a focus on strategic developmental sectors in the cooperation between Morocco and Mauritania.

In his speech during the opening of the first Mauritanian-Moroccan Economic Parliamentary Forum, which will continue over two days, he stated that cooperation between the two countries should primarily concentrate on strategic developmental sectors such as education, health, vocational training, fisheries, food security, trade, renewable energies, infrastructure, and various basic services.

He added that one of the goals of the parliamentary forum is to enhance cooperation between the two countries in various economic areas, including facilitating opportunities for joint investment, exchanging successful legislative and vocational training experiences, ensuring food sovereignty, and improving livestock breeds.

He noted that the valuable shared heritage serves as a solid reference to enhance Mauritanian-Moroccan relations to the level desired by the leaders of both nations.

He explained that the ambition in this regard is to elevate these relations to a strategic level where cooperation between the two countries attains the rightful place it deserves, reflecting the existing bonds and mutual feelings of goodwill and appreciation.

He also called for making the Mauritanian-Moroccan Economic Parliamentary Forum a model and a platform to strengthen the meaningful consultation and fruitful cooperation between the two countries.

The parliamentary forum aspires to serve as a platform for dialogue and cooperation among parliamentarians, governments, and economic actors from Morocco and Mauritania, supporting sustainable development, enhancing regional integration, and strengthening parliamentary relations to ensure effective legislative accompaniment for bilateral projects, as well as promoting investment and economic exchange, particularly in strategic sectors.

Additionally, it aims to encourage the exchange of successful experiences and practices between the two countries, and to strengthen trilateral cooperation by involving African and international actors to expand development opportunities and build effective bilateral partnerships through a three-dimensional approach that includes legislative and executive authorities alongside the private sector, establishing a mechanism for follow-up and evaluation to ensure the implementation of recommendations and agreements arising from the forum.

The opening session of the forum, chaired by the President of the Mauritanian National Assembly and the President of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami, was attended by the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests, Ahmed El Bouari, the Secretary of State in charge of Foreign Trade, Omar Hajira, the Mauritanian Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, Amam Ould Bibata, the Mauritanian Minister in charge of Budget, Koudior Moussa Ankinour, the Mauritanian Minister of Culture and Communication, and government spokesperson, El Hussein Ould Medou, the Mauritanian Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Infrastructure, El Fadhl Ould Sidati, and the Moroccan Ambassador in Nouakchott, Hamid Shabar.
