Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri, the head of the Druze community, called on Thursday for the intervention of “international forces to maintain peace” in Syria, denouncing a “unjustified extermination campaign” against members of his community, following sectarian clashes in two areas populated by Druze.
A statement issued by al-Hajri, who is considered one of the prominent spiritual leaders of the Druze in Syria, described the events in the areas of Jaramana and Sahnaia near Damascus as a “unjustified extermination campaign against civilians in their homes.” He stated that “the systematic mass killing requires immediate intervention by international forces to maintain peace and to prevent these crimes from continuing and to halt them immediately.”
