Tangier Hosts International Conference Calling for Morocco to Become a Hub for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development

Participants at the International Conference on Intelligent Systems for Sustainable Development, held in Tangier from May 21 to 23, called for the strengthening of applied scientific research in the field of artificial intelligence and promoting Morocco’s status as a leading regional hub in this vital area, emphasizing the importance of accelerating the implementation of the “Digital Morocco 2030” strategy.

The recommendations from the seventh session of the conference, which coincided with the inaugural edition of the International Technology and Innovation Exhibition “WayTech 2025” under the theme “Artificial Intelligence: A Bridge to a Digital and Sustainable Future,” stressed the need to develop digital infrastructure, activate national and international partnerships, and invest in human capital by integrating artificial intelligence into educational curricula, training specialized Moroccan competencies capable of addressing digital challenges.

The recommendations also highlighted the importance of directing scientific research toward practical solutions that serve national development priorities in agriculture, water, energy, and transport. They called for the establishment of a national open innovation network that includes universities, enterprises, research centers, and civil society, to enhance participatory research and translate its results into impactful projects.

Participants also urged the empowerment of youth and women in the digital field through support programs for startups, organizing training courses, and encouraging creativity and innovation. They emphasized the significance of organizing regular sectoral hackathons, given the success of the current edition, which resulted in scalable innovative solutions.

The conference president, Professor Mustafa Zayani, a faculty member at the Faculty of Science and Technology in Tangier, affirmed that this scientific event has become an international reference in the fields of technological research and smart development, serving as a platform for disseminating knowledge and exchanging best practices among experts and academics from various countries. He noted that the conference represents a scientific platform for publishing peer-reviewed research contributing to the construction of a knowledge economy.

During the closing session of the conference, the results of the hackathon competition were announced, recognizing the top three winners in the areas of smart cities, geospatial intelligence, smart agriculture, and industrial innovation. A total of 376 students from various Moroccan universities participated in the competition, presenting innovative technological solutions expected to evolve into promising entrepreneurial projects.
