A Swedish project to enhance green hydrogen production in Morocco with funding of $2 million

Metacon, a Swedish company, has secured a $2 million contract to supply a 1-megawatt pressurized electrolyzer station to one of Morocco’s largest renewable energy companies, which has an energy asset portfolio of approximately 2,000 megawatts, making it one of the largest investors in wind energy in Africa.

The project involves delivering a ready-to-use and portable electrolyzer system in containers, operated off-grid using wind power, aimed at producing green hydrogen. This initiative is a pilot step towards launching large-scale industrial production of green hydrogen, alongside electronic fuel and green ammonia.

Krister Wikner, President and CEO of Metacon, stated that this project marks the beginning of a long-term relationship with the Moroccan side, in line with their ambitious goals for producing clean energy both within and outside Morocco.

This project aligns with Morocco’s national hydrogen strategy, which leverages the country’s abundant solar and wind energy resources, positioning Morocco as a key player in the global shift towards renewable energy.

Morocco benefits from its geographical proximity to Europe and the availability of necessary infrastructure for cross-border energy connectivity, giving it strong potential to become a regional hub for the production and export of green hydrogen.

Last March, Morocco approved a series of major projects in the green hydrogen sector with investments totaling $32.5 billion, targeting the production of ammonia, steel, and industrial fuel, as part of an ambitious vision to support a green economy and enhance energy sovereignty.
