The Brazilian Football Confederation announced on Monday that Italian Carlo Ancelotti will take over the vacant position as head coach of the national team before the 2026 World Cup, following his departure from Real Madrid.
Spanish media had earlier reported that former midfielder Xabi Alonso will become the new head coach of Real Madrid in La Liga, with a three-year contract upon leaving Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season.
The 65-year-old coach will be the first permanent foreign coach for Brazil and will lead the team in World Cup qualifying matches against Paraguay and Ecuador next month.
This will mark Ancelotti’s first international assignment, as he takes the reins of Brazil as one of the most decorated club coaches in football and the only manager to have won all five major leagues in Europe.
Since returning to the Spanish capital in 2021, Ancelotti has led Real Madrid to La Liga and Champions League titles, but after the defeat against Barcelona on Sunday, it is almost certain he will leave without any titles this season.
