On Tuesday, German lawmakers elected conservative leader Friedrich Merz as Chancellor in the second round of voting, following his unexpected failure in the first round.

In the second round, Merz received 325 votes out of 630 members of the council, while 289 votes were cast against him, securing an absolute majority.
