Trump’s Advisor Clarifies Statements and Reaffirms Washington’s Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Western Sahara
After causing widespread controversy following his statements to Al-Arabiya channel regarding Washington’s support for Morocco’s position on Western Sahara, U.S. presidential advisor for African affairs, Messaoud Boules, linked that support to the “consent of all parties.” His remark was interpreted as a retreat from the United States’ longstanding stance, garnering significant approval from Algerian media and supporters of the terrorist Polisario Front.
The backlash prompted Boules to act swiftly. He reshared a tweet from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio clearly affirming that the United States reaffirms its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and supports the autonomy initiative as the only serious and lasting solution to the conflict.
Boules’ clumsy handling of the issue highlighted his misunderstanding of the complexities surrounding the Western Sahara matter. This was evident in his contradictory statements before he attempted to redirect the narrative back to the official position issued by the U.S. State Department, reiterating support for the autonomy initiative as the sole solution option.
