The General Delegation for Penitentiary Administration and Reintegration clarified the reasons behind the coverage of prison yards with protective nets in several penitentiary facilities, stating that this initiative is part of a continuous strategic plan aimed at enhancing security and safety. The delegation denied that it is merely a pilot project, as claimed in certain articles published on various websites.

In a clarifying statement addressed to the public, the delegation explained that this measure is not related, as rumored, to an attempt to avoid what has been termed the “French scenario,” but rather is part of a program it began implementing in 2015, gradually securing the recreational yards with protective nets, particularly in urban facilities that are more susceptible to the phenomenon of contraband being thrown over the prison walls.

The statement added that this operation is ongoing and that the coverage of the remaining targeted penitentiary institutions is currently being completed, including the local prison in Beni Mellal. It emphasized that this measure is part of a comprehensive vision to enhance the security of the internal spaces of penitentiary facilities and protect them from any potential breaches.

The General Delegation concluded its statement by stressing that these measures are in line with its ongoing commitment to ensuring a safe prison environment, in accordance with national laws and international standards applicable in the management of penal institutions.
