The French National Assembly affirms Paris’s support for Morocco in its pursuit of a permanent seat on the Security Council.

In an interview with the newspaper “L’Opinion,” published today, Naima Moutchou, Vice President of the French National Assembly, confirmed Paris’s backing for Morocco’s efforts to secure a permanent position in the United Nations Security Council. She emphasized that the position expressed by French President during the summer of 2024, which was conveyed in a letter to King Mohammed VI, stating that “the present and future of the Sahara is under Moroccan sovereignty,” aligns with the historical and humanitarian reality of the region.

Moutchou discussed the strategic relations between France and Morocco, highlighting that Paris firmly supports Rabat’s diplomatic and political ambitions. She reiterated France’s position that the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco in 2007 is the “only viable solution” to reach a political resolution to the ongoing conflict.

The French official affirmed that the fact that the Sahara has historically, legally, and humanly been an integral part of Moroccan identity cannot be overlooked. “This region has always been part of the Kingdom of Morocco before colonialism, and Morocco has consistently and responsibly asserted its sovereignty over it,” Moutchou stated.

Moutchou also noted that these developments occur during a sensitive time on the geopolitical front, with the region facing serious security and regional challenges. She pointed out that Morocco remains a key player in achieving stability and cooperation within the Arab world and West Africa. “Morocco remains a cornerstone of stability and moderation in the Islamic Arab world and West Africa,” she added.

Furthermore, Moutchou addressed the vital role the French National Assembly can play in strengthening relations between France and Morocco, indicating that parliamentary cooperation could serve as a main channel for solidifying ties between the two countries across various fields, including education, culture, security, and the environment.

She highlighted that the French National Assembly could play an important role in supporting parliamentary collaboration between France and Morocco by organizing diplomatic visits and exchanging views with their Moroccan counterparts within the framework of friendship groups between the two nations.
