On Monday, at the headquarters of the House of Councillors, two memoranda of understanding were signed regarding parliamentary cooperation between the House of Councillors and its counterparts in Lesotho and Pakistan, during the third session of the South-South Parliamentary Dialogue Forum.
The memoranda, signed by the President of the House of Councillors, Mohamed Walid Rachid, and his counterparts, the President of the Senate of Lesotho, Mamonenyang Mokhetini, and the President of the Senate of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Yousaf Raza Gillani, aim to enhance parliamentary dialogue and contribute to strengthening bilateral relations and the bonds of friendship.
They also seek to collaborate on legislative and technical aspects through the structural frameworks of the legislative and administrative institutions of the signing parties, or through friendship groups, as well as to develop initiatives to enhance the capacities of parliamentary staff working in the legislative institutions of the signatories. This includes administrative initiatives such as organizing conferences, forums, informational seminars, staff attachment programs, workshops, and international events that promote the study and exchange of information on significant issues, parliamentary work, and parliamentary procedures.
Among the intended objectives is to serve common interests in multilateral parliamentary bodies at the regional, continental, and international levels.
The signing of the memoranda reflects an awareness of the importance of parliamentary diplomacy, consultation, and interaction as means for cooperation and dialogue, strengthening friendship and synergy between the signing legislative institutions. This move responds to the needs of the concerned legislative institutions to continue enhancing relationships and partnerships to take advantage of the available opportunities through bilateral cooperation on economic, political, and cultural fronts.
