Rabat Hosts the First Edition of the African Indoor Football Cup for Women, Eyes Turn to the “Atlas Lionesses”

All eyes are on Rabat as the first edition of the African Women’s Indoor Football Cup kicks off tomorrow, Tuesday, April 22, 2025. This historic event will take place at the Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex and will run until the 30th of this month.

Rabat, which has transformed into one of the key capitals of football on the continent in recent years, is hosting an unprecedented event that confirms the growing momentum of women’s football in Morocco and Africa.

Nine Teams in Search of Glory

The tournament features nine teams, divided into three groups:

Group A: Morocco, Cameroon, Namibia
Group B: Angola, Egypt, Guinea
Group C: Senegal, Tanzania, Madagascar

According to the competition system, the three teams that top the groups, along with the best second-placed team, will qualify for the semifinals.

The Lionesses on a Mission to Make History

The Moroccan national team, entering the tournament as hosts and aspiring champions, faces a dual challenge: to claim their first continental title and secure a ticket to the upcoming World Cup in the Philippines.

Moroccan fans are counting on the performance of the “Atlas Lionesses” to achieve a strong start, especially after the support that women’s football has received in recent years, both in terms of infrastructure and training.

The World Cup at Stake

The event does not stop at the continental title; the final of the tournament will determine the identity of the two African teams that will represent the continent in the first edition of the Women’s Indoor Football World Cup, set to be held in the Philippines from November 21 to December 7, 2025.

Sporting Stakes and Political Messages

Hosting the tournament in Rabat carries more than just symbolic importance, as it aligns with Morocco’s strategy to enhance its position as an emerging football power in Africa and to invigorate sports diplomacy, especially after successfully organizing major events, the latest being the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations.
