The government of Kano State in Nigeria has unveiled ambitious plans to attract Moroccan investments exceeding $10 billion over the next five years, focusing on renewable energy and solid minerals development.

This announcement follows a high-level official visit to the Kingdom of Morocco led by the state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as part of a trade and investment mission aimed at strengthening economic relations between the two parties.

The governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, stated in a press release on Sunday, April 20, 2025, that the visit resulted in anticipated agreements to sign several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between Kano State and leading Moroccan institutions.

He indicated that these agreements will cover various sectors including renewable energy, agriculture, and trade, as part of a comprehensive plan to revitalize the local economy in the state.

The visit included strategic meetings with prominent entities such as the Moroccan Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN), OCP Africa, and the Casablanca Chamber of Commerce.

Dawakin Tofa emphasized that the forthcoming agreements would address vital areas, including attracting investments, innovative financing models, and employing the latest energy storage and distribution technologies, thereby enhancing Kano’s industrial infrastructure.

One of the highlights of the visit was the expected collaboration with MASEN, which operates one of the largest solar power plants in Africa in Ouarzazate, with a production capacity of 500 megawatts. The agency confirmed its support for the “Lighting Kano” initiative, which aims to produce 2,000 megawatts of solar energy over the next five years.

In the agricultural sector, an agreement was reached with OCP Africa on projects that include establishing fertilizer blending factories, modernizing agricultural supply chains, and providing support to small farmers through advanced technologies.

Dawakin Tofa described the visit as a “tremendous success” that will enable Kano State to accelerate its industrial growth, transition to clean energy, and achieve sustainable agricultural development, noting that the cooperation with the Casablanca Chamber of Commerce, a prominent institution in the private sector in Africa, reflects a serious commitment to building strong partnerships between Nigeria and Morocco.
