Nigeria Aims to Produce 8,000 Megawatts of Electricity by 2027

Nigeria is aiming to produce about 8,000 megawatts of electricity by 2027 in order to overcome frequent power outages and improve access to more stable electricity for Nigerians.

The Nigerian Minister of Energy, Adegbite Adeleke, stated yesterday during a press conference held in Abuja that the West African giant achieved a historic leap in electricity production on March 2, surpassing the threshold of 6,000 megawatts, which heralds a promising future for this sector.

The Nigerian official added that the average daily electricity production and distribution in Nigeria reached approximately 5,700 megawatts during the first quarter of 2025, thanks to the efforts of various stakeholders in the sector. The electricity grid in Nigeria is under significant pressure due to a population exceeding 230 million, which often leads to power outages.

The aging electrical equipment and repeated acts of sabotage are among the major factors limiting Nigerians’ access to stable electricity.

The liquidity crisis also threatens electricity producers, who recently warned of supply disruptions amid long delays in repaying debts owed by their customers amounting to nearly 4 trillion naira (around 2.5 billion dollars).
