Morocco is nearing the production of its first automobile battery and is betting on the development of an integrated industrial system.

The battery production sector is expected to experience significant growth over the next few years, as Morocco aims to develop a comprehensive industrial framework dedicated to this sector. This initiative comes in the context of enhancing the dynamism of the Moroccan automotive industry, which achieved exports of around 157.6 billion dirhams (equivalent to 15 billion dollars) in 2024, with half coming from the export of finished vehicles and the other half from components and parts primarily exported to assembly plants in Europe.

According to the Eastern Economy website, Morocco is preparing to make a leap in the automotive manufacturing industry by increasing the local integration rate from 69% to 80%, coinciding with the imminent start of production for the first electric vehicle batteries in the kingdom, as stated by Rashid Machou, President of the Moroccan Association of Automotive Industry and Assembly (AMICA).

The Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, confirmed during his speech at the eighth edition of the Automotive Meetings held this week in Tangier that the first Moroccan battery will be produced starting next year. He added that “this achievement will bring the sector closer to achieving complete local integration, while strengthening Morocco’s position as an industrial powerhouse on the African continent.”

Moreover, the President of the Moroccan Association of Automotive Industry and Assembly emphasized that the launch of these productive investment projects in the near future will contribute to creating added local value by integrating more parts into the industrial value chain, and it will enhance Morocco’s exports of automotive components.

It is noteworthy that most anticipated investments in the battery sector aim to cater to exports towards European Union countries, with which the kingdom has a free trade agreement.
