Morocco and Mauritania on the Brink of a New Customs and Trade Agreement to Enhance Economic Exchange

Official negotiations have begun in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, between Morocco and Mauritania for the signing of a new customs and trade agreement, aiming to modernize the legal framework governing economic relations between the two countries.

The discussions, led by technical delegations from both sides, are set to review the 1986 agreement which stipulates customs exemptions, amidst a joint effort to boost trade that reached $350 million in 2024, marking a 10% increase compared to the previous year.

The first session of the joint technical committee discussed ways to develop economic partnership and open Moroccan markets to Mauritanian products, alongside integration projects covering agriculture, renewable energy, transportation, infrastructure, artisanal industries, and tourism.

The negotiations reflect a mutual political will to deepen bilateral relations, with Morocco currently positioned as Mauritania’s primary trading partner at the African level.
