Moldova Supports Morocco’s Autonomy Plan

Moldova expressed, on Tuesday in Chișinău, its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan aimed at reaching a final settlement for the regional dispute over its Sahara, deeming it “the most serious and credible basis” for resolving this conflict.

This support was announced in a joint statement adopted following discussions between Mihai Popșoi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, and Nasser Bourita, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, who is on a working visit to Chișinău.

The Republic of Moldova expressed its “full support for the sincere efforts” exerted by Morocco to resolve the issue of the Moroccan Sahara. On this occasion, the Moldovan Foreign Minister reiterated his country’s backing for the United Nations-led process aimed at achieving a political, just, practical, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution.

The two ministers also agreed on the exclusivity of the United Nations in the political process and reaffirmed their support for Security Council Resolution 2756 (2024), which emphasizes the role and responsibility of the parties in seeking a realistic, practical, and lasting agreement, as well as a political solution based on consensus.

Furthermore, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Moldova confirmed their support for the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General and his efforts to advance the political process based on relevant Security Council resolutions and the principles and objectives of the UN Charter.

They also reiterated their support for the MINURSO mission, as stated in the joint announcement.
