On Wednesday, attention was drawn to the dynamics in the Berkan region regarding digital governance during a meeting held as part of the 30th International Book and Publishing Fair in Rabat.
This meeting, organized under the slogan “Smart City in the Service of City Management… Berkan, a Power of Intelligence,” provided an opportunity to present Berkan’s digital experience as a model of a “smart city.”
In his address, the Governor of Berkan, Mohamed Ali Habouha, emphasized that the region’s digital experience is based on continuous efforts to improve the services provided to citizens through digitization.
He highlighted that Berkan is home to the first school of artificial intelligence, namely the National School of Artificial Intelligence and Digitization in Berkan, as well as the first local development company dedicated to innovation and spatial intelligence.
Habouha also touched upon the efforts and measures taken by regional authorities to make Berkan an inspiring model.
In this regard, he mentioned the digitization of the region’s various networks, including the electrical network, and the adoption of a regional disparity index in their working methodology to identify the vulnerability of specific areas. Additionally, he spoke about creating a new working environment inspired by corporate workspaces through the establishment of open, interactive, and dynamic work areas.
Economic expert and researcher at the Royal Institute for Strategic Studies, Tawfiq Boudechich, highlighted the momentum of development in the eastern region since the King’s speech in 2003, reviewing the major development programs launched in this context.
He noted that “the Berkan region has become a model for territorial governance that engages all stakeholders in a framework of transparency, monitoring, and positive interaction.”
Mr. Boudechich also stressed the importance of mobilizing local talents and utilizing them for territorial development, praising the efforts made by all stakeholders to enhance the region.
He added that Berkan has managed to achieve a noticeable technological leap thanks to technology and digitization.
For his part, Philippe Michel, author of the book “Berkan, a Power of Intelligence,” showcased the tremendous potential that Berkan possesses as a city rich in history, resources, and human capital, referencing the key themes of the book dedicated to the region.
He stated, “This work is the result of two years of effort, during which I collaborated with a qualified team from the eastern region, including media figures and university professionals.”
This meeting also served as an opportunity to present the book “Berkan, a Power of Intelligence,” published by the East Agency, and to display a corporate film highlighting the dynamics in Berkan, which has become a model for a smart city and a reference on the continental level.
