Several citizens have reported noticeable disruptions in internet services since Monday afternoon, raising questions about the connection of these issues to widespread power outages in Spain and some regions of Portugal.

In this context, the telecommunications company “Orange” confirmed in a post on its official Facebook page that these disruptions are indeed linked to the power outages affecting large areas in both European countries, noting that the issues impacted international links that transit through those countries, which negatively affected connection quality.

Although the undersea cables connecting Morocco to global internet networks are not directly affected by such outages, failures in data centers or servers in Spain and Portugal often lead to rerouting of data traffic to alternative paths. This rerouting can result in congestion on alternative networks, causing slower internet speeds and increased latency, and sometimes even connection drops.

The severity of these problems increases when the incident coincides with a surge in data demand or unexpected pressure on the networks, leading to a noticeable deterioration in the quality of service for users.

Morocco relies on a set of undersea cables to ensure stable connection to the global internet, including the “Medusa” and “Cita” cables, along with others that pass through the Mediterranean Sea. This advanced infrastructure allows the kingdom to benefit from fast and reliable international connectivity. However, sudden incidents, such as power outages in neighboring countries, can have indirect repercussions on internet performance within the country.

While Morocco enjoys a good digital infrastructure compared to other countries that depend on limited international links, these sporadic incidents can still create tangible impacts on the quality of internet services, adversely affecting user experiences.
